Effects and mechanism of action

NMDA receptor antagonist: 3-MeO-PCP’s primary mechanism is acting as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, which interferes with glutamate, a key neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory.
Increased affinity: It has a stronger binding affinity to NMDA receptors than PCP, leading to more potent effects.
Physical effects: Common physical side effects include increased heart rate (tachycardia) and blood pressure (hypertension).
Health risks
Serious health consequences: High doses of 3-MeO-PCP can lead to serious health issues, including cardiorespiratory problems like pulmonary edema (excess fluid in the lungs) and brain swelling.
Psychosis and behavioral issues: Acute intoxication can cause severe psychological distress, including psychosis, aggression, and violent behavior.
Long-term cognitive problems: Chronic use can result in cognitive impairment, memory and speech difficulties, depression, anxiety disorders, and psychotic symptoms that persist even after discontinuing use.
Overdose and death: Fatalities have been reported, both from 3-MeO-PCP use alone and in combination with other substances like alcohol, stimulants, and sedatives.
Synergistic toxicity: Mixing 3-MeO-PCP with other drugs, especially in high-activity settings like parties or clubs, can increase the risk of toxic effects.
United Kingdom: Analogues of methoxetamine (MXE), which includes 3-MeO-PCP, have been categorized as Class B drugs.
